Linking Intraplate Volcanism to Lithospheric Structure and Asthenospheric Flow

چکیده
Abstract Several of Earth's intraplate volcanic provinces are hard to reconcile with the mantle plume hypothesis. Instead, they exhibit characteristics that more compatible shallower processes involve interplay between uppermost flow and base heterogeneous lithosphere. The mechanisms most commonly invoked edge‐driven convection (EDC) shear‐driven upwelling (SDU), both which act focus associated decompression melting adjacent steps in lithospheric thickness. In this study, we undertake a systematic numerical investigation, 2‐D 3‐D, quantify sensitivity EDC, SDU, key controlling parameters. Our simulations demonstrate spatio‐temporal EDC sensitive geometry material properties step, addition magnitude depth‐dependence upper‐mantle viscosity. These also indicate asthenospheric shear can either enhance or reduce velocities melting, depending upon orientation relative step. When combined, such sensitivities explain why step changes thickness, common along cratonic edges passive margins, only produce volcanism at isolated points space time. predicted trends melt production suggest that, absence potential interactions plumes, SDU viable for shorter‐lived, lower‐volume provinces.

African lithospheric structure, volcanism, and topography
In Africa volumetrically minor, mid-plate volcanic rocks of Cenozoic age are concentrated in areas affected by Pan-African (500 _+ 150 Ma) crustal reactivation, and are virtually absent from cratonic areas. We interpret this as indicating that Pan-African areas are underlain by fertile lithospheric mantle and cratons by depleted lithospheric mantle, and propose a model to explain both the distr...
متن کاملHafnium isotopic variations in East Atlantic intraplate volcanism
The broad belt of intraplate volcanism in the East Atlantic between 25 and 37 N is proposed to have formed by two adjacent hotspot tracks (the Madeira and Canary tracks) that possess systematically different isotopic signatures reflecting different mantle source compositions. To test this model, Hf isotope ratios from volcanic rocks from all individual islands and all major seamounts are presen...
متن کاملHigh Potash Volcanic Rocks and Pyroclastic Deposits of Damavand Volcano, Iran, an Example of Intraplate Volcanism
Damavand is a fascinating dormant stratovolcano, 60 km to the ENE of Tehran located in the Alborz Mountains. Damavand volcanic products consist of lava flows and pyroclastic fall, flow and surge deposits from different eruption cycles. The volcanic rocks ranges from trachyandesite to trachyadacite and minor basalt. The mineral assemblage consists of potash feldspar (Or43/7), Plagioclase (An25 t...
متن کاملGlacial isostasy and long-term crustal movements in Fennoscandia with respect to lithospheric and asthenospheric processes and properties-comment
Recently, Morner discussed his model of glacio-isostatic compensation in the light of new seismological models of the upper mantle below Fennoscandia (Miimer, 1990). He concluded that the P-wave velocity distribution is in “full agreement” with his estimate of the viscosity distribution as inferred from glacio-isostatic relaxation. Whereas the consistency of seismological and geodynamical earth...
متن کاملLithospheric foundering and underthrusting imaged beneath Tibet
Long-standing debates exist over the timing and mechanism of uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and, more specifically, over the connection between lithospheric evolution and surface expressions of plateau uplift and volcanism. Here we show a T-shaped high wave speed structure in our new tomographic model beneath South-Central Tibet, interpreted as an upper-mantle remnant from earlier lithospheric f...
